If you’ve ever searched for help with a baby carrier or wondered if you’re “doing it right,” you’ve probably come across the term babywearing consultant.
I did too—and like many of you, I found myself asking: what does a babywearing consultant actually do?
So, if you’ve ever seen someone wearing their baby and thought, that is so cool, but it looks complicated, you are not alone.
Babywearing feels incredibly natural—and at the same time, it can be surprisingly technical. As my husband likes to say, it’s a bit like “baby origami.”
But when it clicks, it can transform parenting: more connection, more freedom, and often, a calmer baby.
That’s where a babywearing consultant comes in - helping babywearing click.
Many consultants complete formal training and stay current with evolving safety guidelines and best practices. Through this training they gain an understanding of both biomechanics and the relational dynamics of babywearing—the physical and emotional pieces.
That foundation directly informs how we approach safety, one of the primary concerns for caregivers. A consultant helps you learn how to position your baby in a way that prioritizes safety and supports healthy development: keeping airways clear, hips properly aligned, and weight evenly distributed.
Once safety feels solid, the next question is usually how to actually use a carrier, followed by which carrier to choose. Woven wraps, ring slings, meh dais, soft structured carriers, hybrids… each comes with its own learning curve. A babywearing consultant walks you through your options based on your lifestyle and helps you find what feels most natural for you.
Many consultants also offer access to a library of carriers, allowing you to try different styles—often using a demo doll—before committing. After all, there aren’t many places to try carriers in person (especially here in West Michigan).
Support doesn’t stop once you’ve learned the basics. Babywearing consultants also help more experienced wearers troubleshoot challenges like discomfort, fit issues, or a baby who just isn’t settling. A trained educator can quickly identify what’s off and offer simple and effective adjustments.
They also play an important role in countering misinformation. Social media—and even some baby carrier brands—can be full of unsafe practices and misleading marketing. Without a knowledgeable voice in the community, caregivers are often left to sort through conflicting information on their own.
Beyond education, babywearing consultants are community builders. They host classes, workshops, and local meetups—creating spaces where caregivers can learn, ask questions, and connect with others on a similar journey. Many also run learning or lending libraries as a resource for the families they serve.
If you’re curious about babywearing—or just want to feel more confident doing it—I’d love to support you.
Join a class, explore the lending library, or reach out directly to get started.
I look forward to meeting you!
